This poster by David Gentleman is one of a set of eight, commissioned by the Stop the War Coalition in 2003, in protest against Britain’s involvement in the US-led war in Iraq. Seven of Britain’s leading artists were commissioned to produce posters. The posters were signed and published in a limited edition of 100.
This image by David Gentleman relies on simple visuals to communicate its message. The word ‘No’ is splattered with blood. The words on the letter ‘o’ condense the issues and debate around the war: blood price, collateral damage and imperialism etc. The straightforward appearance of the poster belies the complexity of its theme.
