Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)

Watercolour
ca. 1800-1822 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This watercolour bears an inscription: 'Presented by the Baron Jacquin to the Horticultural Society of London, 1822 / A more exact drawing than the old one published in the Icones plant. rarior.' This presumably refers to Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin, who wrote many botanical works. They included the Icones Plantarum Rariorum (‘Pictures of Rare Plants’), which was published in Vienna between 1781 and 1793. Jacquin was created a baron in 1806, but died in 1817. His botanical projects were continued by his son, Joseph, who probably presented this drawing.
