Lady Hawarden created many tableaux in which her older daughters wore fancy dress and acted out scenes of gallantry. Here, one daughter acts the man’s role, clad in a cloak and doffing a tricorn (three-pointed) hat to the other sister, who plays the role of an 18th-century lady. As always, Hawarden is not only interested in costume and gesture but also in strong lighting effects. Notice the play of shadows and the contrast between the jet-black edge of the cloak and the delicate line of the muslin curtain.
