Florence Elizabeth and Clementina Maude, Togge House, Dundrum

Photograph
ca. 1859-1861 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This scene has been set up in the sunshine outside an outhouse at the Hawardens’ country home at Dundrum in Ireland. Perhaps the throne was made in the estate workshop and the potted lily came from the hothouse. The big house can be seen at the rear at the left. Lady Hawarden would surely have cropped this part of the picture if she ever exhibited the photograph. The girls have managed to still their pet dogs long enough for their mother to make an exposure, apparently by applying great concentration. Everything else about this scene remains conjecture.
