Neck Ornament
early 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This is a ceremonial necklace ornament or ‘tayo’, used by Newar women of the Kathmandu Valley on important ritual occasions, including marriage. In early forms of these ornaments, the tubular body is hollow, suggesting that they may have been amulet containers, but present examples are entirely closed and so cannot now be used for that purpose. The Indian origins of this type of ornament are indicated by the teardrop ornament on the upper edge of this example, a motif found on Indian jewellery.
