Place of origin |
Here Clementina Maude poses for her mother beside what seems to be an oriental painted cabinet. With her left hand she pulls out a drawer. A book rests casually on top of the cabinet. A desk at the left contains a clutter of objects, including a vase of flowers and a basket-woven container. Lady Hawarden may have calculated that the informal surroundings would suggest a real situation, rather than an artificial and posed one. In this, a young woman pauses for a moment of reflection before she investigates the secrets held by the cabinet.
