Photograph
ca.1862 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The photographer's daughter poses beside a tall sash-window, as if she has just stepped from the balcony into the studio. She gathers up her heavy skirt with her right hand, revealing a bare arm. She occupies a space beteween the exterior and the interior and her position is also framed by the window, the architecture of the room and by the shadows that create strong horizontals across the floor. She is photographed as if alone in a private world of her own thoughts or reverie.
