This is a lead medal made by Hans Bolsterer and dated 1562. The medal is an obverse only medal which represents the bust of Matthes Hess of Nuremberg (d. 1573) facing almost front, bearded and wearing a cap.
From 1540 Bolsterer was active as a sculptor, engraver and medallist in Nuremberg, using models of both wood and stone. He worked in Frankfurt (1546-8) and Innsbruck (1555) before returning to Nuremberg in 1566, where he died on 26th December 1573.
