The Royal James, flagship of Lord Sandwich, in the centre of the composition, was destroyed by fire in the course of the battle. A portrait of her, offset from a drawing by the elder, is in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. There is a drawing of the Burning of the Royal James by the younger, in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. There are also several paintings by the van de Veldes of this event.
