Design for the east wing of
Wentworth Castle (Stainborough
Hall), near Barnsley, Yorkshire
British, about 1709
Pen and ink, and wash
This recasing of an existing house was
commissioned by Thomas Wentworth, Lord
Raby, to rival relative's house which was
nearby. Wentworth was British ambassador
to the King of Prussia, and he chose the
Prussian Royal Architect, Bodt, whose only
British work this is. The style is typical of
early 18th century Franco-Prussian
architecture, and similar to an unbuilt
Palace Bodt designed for the Elector at
Dresden. Building was slow; the interiors
were still being completed in 1725.
