Dish Ring

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The dish ring was a dinner table or sideboard accessory. It is in the form of a hollow cylindrical or spool-shaped ring, and was used to protect the surface from heat by supporting a plate of hot food (probably of wood, ceramic or glass) on top. At first the top and bottom rims of the spool-shaped sides were of equal diameter. Later examples have the top narrower than the base. These articles became a speciality of Dublin silversmiths in the mid-18th century and were later copied in Sheffield plate by Sheffield manufacturers. It is rare to find them in brass.
