Tea Caddy

1768-1769 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The shape of this container for loose leaf tea imitates the crates in which tea was shipped to England from China. Goldsmiths often engraved Chinese characters on the sides of caddies or canisters, but here the engraver has produced a trellis design with sprigs of flowers. He appears to have been inspired by the designs of English textiles in the 1750s.
