The moulded tortoiseshell is inlaid with engraved mother of pearl, piqué point and partly engraved posé plaques. Five similar pieces are known, including one in the Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor. The closeness of their shape, design and technique suggests that they were made in the same workshop.

Physical description
Dish, oval with slightly waved edges, inlaid with gold, the border of piqué acanthus foliage and mother-o-pearl rosettes. In the centre a scene showing ruins grouped on either side of an obelisk with, in the foreground, a man reclining on a tree stump near a group of animals and, to the left, two men standing in conversation.
