This bust may have been part of a reliquary, a receptacle for holy relics, used for Catholic worship. It may represent St Joseph who, in the late 17th century, became the patron saint of all countries under Spanish rule. This included the Southern Netherlands, where this bust was made.

Silver Gallery: Hildburgh bought this silver bust at the sale of the SE Kennedy Collection, at Christie's in 1918 and gave it to the Museum in 1952. It was possibly part of a reliquary and may represent St Joseph who became saint of all countries under the Spanish crown in 1679.(26/11/2002)
