The gilded lid of this pomander or scent container can be removed to release six segmented compartments which are hinged at the bottom. The form imitates a western European 17th-century object but the ornament is closer to silver made in the Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey was at the heart of the Empire) and it was bought in Persia. It was common for court silversmiths in Istanbul to produce objects in western fashions.
