The sides and rim of the lid are silver and only the top and bottom are tortoiseshell. The decoration on the lid is cut from one silver sheet. It shows the head of Roman god Mercury (Greek: Hermes), identifiable by his winged helmet. Similar silver boxes with foliage and grotesques or animals are known from Britain as well as Germany and the Netherlands.(26/11/2002) |
