The silver surface of this cross is beautifully engraved with objects known as the 'instruments of the Passion' which artists have long used to symbolise the trial and crucifixion of Christ. Among the objects depicted here are the dice played by Roman soldiers gambling for Christ's clothing, the crown of thorns worn by Christ and the Veil of Veronica showing the image of Christ's face imprinted on a cloth.

Silver Gallery: The silver surface of this cross is beautifully engraved. It shows the objects used during Christ's trial and crucifixion, including the dice used to gamble for Christ's clothing, the Crown of Thorns and at the bottom, the Veil of Veronica showing a miraculous image of Christ. Engraving was a highly skilled trade. Silversmiths often subcontracted this work.(26/11/2002)
