Wine bowls such as this were made throughout the Caucasus, a vast region encompassing present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and part of northern Russia. They are sometimes called hunting bowls, as many feature stags, hares or other hunted animals. On this example, the central figure is surrounded by a cockerel, a leaping stag, a dog and a lion.

The bowl embossed and chased with an evangelist in the central medallion, a cockerel, a leaping stag, and 2 doglike creatures [one of them a lion?] in the border medallions. Caucasian parcel gilt hunting bowl (saint).
