The popinjay, bow and arrow pendant and the coats of arms enamelled on various badges on this magnificent collar suggest that it belonged to an archery guild or society of Opdorp, a village in Brabant and part of the commune of Malderen. Four of the arms belonged to local dignitaries, including Gilles de Marselaer, who became seigneur of Opdorp in 1544 and Gielis de Rycke who succeeded to the seignory of Malderen in the same year. They possibly became members of the society in 1544, commissioning this collar as a ceremonial badge of office. Popinjays, the old term for parrots, were models of birds tied to tall stakes for target practice.(26/11/2002) |
