Censers are used during church worship for burning incense with thyme and myrtle placed on the embers in an inside liner. The three long chains enable the bearer to swing the censer and spread the fragrant smoke, which passes through the perforated lid attached by a fourth chain, thereby purifying the congregation.

Physical description
Bowl set with oval bosses decorated with blue enamel, moulded base. Round lid with domed cover, set with similar enamelled bosses. Chain and rose not original.
