Object history
The modern pencil inscription added to the mount of one of these prints suggests that this suite is after the work of the French ornamentalist Nicolas Pineau (1684-1754). Pineau produced a suite of designs for cartouches in 1710 (published in Paris by Mariette), but while Böllmann's suite is clearly inspired by this it is not a direct copy. Pineau includes 3 cartouches per plate where Böllmann has 4. Details are similar, such as the mask of Mercury and caduceus, but the arrangement is different, nearing pastiche.
