Object history
Purchase - (£60) Moller-Le Champion, Gibbstown, County Meath, Ireland

From Catalogue of Scandinavian and Baltic Silver, RW Lightbown, V&A, 1975; Andersen fisrt mentioned 1649, died in 1679. The arms and mantling on the lid are substituted for earlier ones still partly visible underneath. The date 1680 has also been substituted for an earlier date and the initial sabove it are squeezed in asymmetrically to fit the decoration. The general form ad pomegranate feet are found in Denmark at least as early as 1648, but the rich and free swirling style of the engraved Floral Baroque suggests a date around 1670.
