Casket
late 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Two tiny padlocks on this box suggest it was used to store personal treasures, such as private papers or jewellery. It is made from agate, a much-prized translucent hardstone and applied with silver mounts decorated with black lacquer. Mounts are not always marked, so it is difficult to tell where the piece was made, but it is similar to examples found in Germany and Hungary.
