Inscribed beneath rim: EXPECTO. LAETAM. VICTORIAM. SVB. VEXILLO. SALVATORIS (Under the Saviour's standard, I wait a happy victory). Under the inscription is a shaped shield, the date 1589 and the initials K.R.D.
On the base: maker's mark GB in monogram for Gabriel Brockmuller (struck twice) of Hillerod; side of beaker dated 1589

Object history note

From Catalogue of Scandinavian and Baltic Silver, RW Lightbown, V&A, 1975, p33: 'This beaker was acquired as Norwegian. Gabriel Brockmuller is mentioned as Royal Goldsmith for the Palace of Frederiksborg in 1585, 1592-1605 and again in 1618-19... The shape is that favoured in Renaissance Denmark and Norway.'

Silver Gallery:
The form of this Danish beaker is typical of 16th century Denmark and Norway and is the oldest dated example of its kind. The Latin inscription translates as 'Under the Saviour's standard, I await a happy victory'. Gabriel Brockmüller, the maker, is recorded as Royal Goldsmith for the Palace of Frederiksborg at Hillerød in 1585, 1592-1605 and again in 1618-19. [26/11/2002]
