The form of this Danish drinking vessel is typical of 16th century Denmark and Norway and is the oldest dated example of its kind. The Latin inscription around the body translates as 'Under the Saviour's standard, I await a happy victory'. Gabriel Brockmüller, the maker, is recorded as Royal Goldsmith for the Palace of Frederiksborg at Hillerød in 1585, 1592-1605 and again in 1618-19.
