Tankard
ca. 1718-1720 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This tankard is decorated in the delicate Régence style, a restrained fashion for silver wares that emerged in France in the late 17th century. Augsburg goldsmiths quickly adopted the Régence style from Parisian ornament prints and produced elegant designs of their own. This tankard, a common choice of gift in southern Germany, combines plain surfaces with delicately chased (hammered) and engraved Régence motifs: borders of strapwork (interlaced bands resembling leather straps), scrolls, fruits and lambrequins (draped cloths).
