Beaker

1636 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The bold presence of this flaring beaker suggests it was made for display rather than for use, to impress the owner's guests and confirm his wealth and high social status. The Romanian inscription records that it was ordered by Dunitraskeo Sholdon, Great Dvornik of High Moldavia (1634-8) and his wife Satha in the Russian year 7144 (1636). The form and fish-scale decoration are modelled on south German beakers of the 1540s.
