Place of origin |
Charles Jones worked as a gardener at Ote Hall in Wivelsfield, Sussex, among other places. He made photographs of the produce and flowers he grew, but he did not exhibit or publish them. His photographs might easily have been forgotten. But in 1981 the writer, collector and photography dealer Sean Sexton bought a trunk of them at Bermondsey antique market in London. He subsequently promoted the photographer’s reputation internationally.
Jones did not develop his prints chemically, a process that produces black and white prints. Instead, he printed them by sunlight - hence their warm and subtle tonality.
