William Burges embarked on his Long Journey through France in April of 1853. It was during this exploration that Burges pursued a cultivated education of the French Gothic Style. Rheims Cathedral was one of the several buildings that he viewed and studied on this trip.

Physical description
Pencil elevation drawing of the west front of the Rheims Cathedral. Five pointed arches in a variety of heights are included with sketches of several full size sculptures of saints set in wall niches between the arches. Many small notes about further decoration are included throughout.
