Casket

1760-1770 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This small but monumental object was probably placed on a dressing-table and used to house jewellery or other small personal items, and it is decorated to reflect the importance of its contents. The style of decoration is typical of the 1760s and early 1770s, showing the transition from the more naturalistic Rococo style of the middle of the century to the lighter, more elegant taste of late 18th-century Neo-classicism. The rather heavy and rigid style of this period of flux has come to be known as 'Transitional'.
