This doll’s house is also a music box which plays the song, ‘Happy Birthday’ when the handle is turned. The house is made of plain wood, with dolls made from clothes pegs dressed in calico. The deisgner and maker of this example, Jane Blyth, made her first doll’s house as a present for her daughter and went on to design and make houses in different shapes and sizes in the same style.

| Object history | Jane Blyth made her first dolls’ house as a present for her daughter. She has had no formal training in art or carpentry but now runs a dolls’ house making business. She designs her houses on paper and then puts them together using pieces of wood bought from DIY shops. Although she makes houses in different shapes and sizes, they all follow a simple modular style. It is said she is influence by the architecture of modern Scandinavia and ancient Japanese shrines. |
