Gallery label | Christopher Farr has commissioned designs from fine artists, from textile designers more used to working with print media, from Royal College of Art students and from the couturier Romeo Gigli. Lilian Lijn is primarily a successful sculptor and book artist and elements from these disciplines are clearly apparent in her designs for Farr, in particular the intriguing and challenging use of the words on the carpet 'She Like Love Flow'. This carpet is one of the most successful results of an enterprising project to combine the work of contemporary western designers with the skills of traditional Turkish carpet knotting.(01/01/2003) |

Purchased. Registered File number 1994/1226. object photographed and measured as part of Advanced Works project, 02/03/17 Historical significance: This carpet was purchased as part of a commission to refurbish the public and staff areas of the RCA Centre for Research and Conservation at the V&A, with work by contemporary artists. Historical context | Christopher Farr has commissioned designs from fine artists, from textile designers more used to working with print media, from Royal College of Art students and from the couturier Romeo Gigli. Farr has then had the designs handknotted in Konya, Central Turkey, from hand-spun and dyed wool. Traditional dyeing techniques bring an extra intensity to the depth of the colours and the subtle variations in shade and tone introduced by handweaving enliven the designs in a way not achieved by the tufting gun technique used for the majority of modern rugs. |
Production | Liliane Lijn is primarily a successful sculptor and book artist and elements from these disciplines are clearly apparent in her designs for Christopher Farr, in particular the intriguing and challenging use of words on the carpet. Reason For Production: Commission |
