Object history
Oliver Messel originally designed The Sleeping Beauty for the Sadler's Wells (now Royal) Ballet in 1946. The production underwent several modifications over the years and the names in the costume indicate that it was worn by dancers of the Covent Garden company in the 1960s, although Coleman also for a time danced with The Royal Ballet Touring Company who performed the same production.
