late 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Panel of figured bobbin lace. The scene on the panel is of a lady and gentleman in fashionable dress of ca. 1685-1695 standing in the centre of a symmetrical arrangement of curving stems bearing wild roses, buds and other flowers. At either side is the figure of the goddess Diana holding a spear and a leashed hunting dog, with a stag and a leopard enclosed by the foliage. Worked in fine cloth stitch, the leaf and flower veins are defined by tiny openings and some filling stitches. The figures are worked in a variety of decorative stitches with raised work for the buttons, bows and other costume details. The lady's fontage and lappets are in detached work. Ground with a round mesh. The edgings and heading are original.
