This is an ink drawing on paper. It is part of the artwork for a new corporate identity for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, designed in 1989-1990 by Neil Svensen and Darrel Worthington of Rufus Leonard Design Consultants. Their brief was to design a ‘mark’, a combination of a ‘symbol’ and ‘logotype’ (an image and a caption), to be printed on all the orchestra’s communication material. Several different designs were considered but this was the chosen symbol. It is intentionally ambiguous. It could represent a conductor with batons, or music dancing between outstretched arms. Alternatively, it may represent the spatial dynamics of the orchestra pit, audience and auditorium.
