Set of Bed Hangings

ca. 1875 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This set of bed hangings was made for the marriage in 1875 of Queen Natalie, the daughter of a Russian colonel, to Milan IV, King of Serbia. The marriage was an unhappy one, and Natalie, who was very popular with the Serbian people, was divorced from the King in 1888. In 1889 Milan abdicated in favour of their 12 year old son, Alexander.

As well as the deep and wide hanging trimmed with lace illustrated here, the set includes a lace-trimmed muslin valance nearly 12 m long that would have been ruched and draped aroung the sides of the bed, and two further valances of lace each measuring nearly 4 m in length.
