This poster by Franz von Stuck advertises the first International Art Exhibition of the Munich Secession. The group was founded in 1892 and was the first group of German artists to secede or withdraw from the exhibitions of more traditional organisations. Von Stuck was the co-founder of this group, and he designed several posters for them. The profile in the poster is that of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. She became a symbol for the Secessionists, as she was a patron of the arts.
