Place of origin

This is a map of the second largest city of Holland, Rotterdam. It was made by the Dutch engraver Carel Allard who is well known for his engraved portraits of English monarchs William and Mary. This was a time when there were extremely close ties between these two countries and it in unsurprising finding high levels of cultural exchange between these two 17th century super-powers. The map is drawn with the buildings elevated and marked out by a large index of 185 buildings and places of interest. In the foreground of the image is a mythological scene in which a personification of Rotterdam, cloaked in the coat of arms of the city, is surrounded by gods and mythical creatures and beasts. The entire map is surrounded and decorated with similar baroque and exotic imagery, like the detail of the ostrich and camel in the menagerie of people and beasts.
