Place of origin |
The influential architect Henry Holland (1745-1806) is commemorated in this print made very shortly after his death. This is the only known printed portrait of him. It shows him seated on a stile, with a view in the background of the detached villa he had built for himself at Hans Place, in Chelsea, London. Around 1780 he had purchased 100 acres of land in Chelsea for a speculative building project; he laid out Sloane Street, built houses there, and also in Cadogan Place and Hans Place.
His other major projects included the alteration and enlargement of Carlton House, Pall Mall, as a residence for the Prince of Wales. He also made improvements to Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire (1789) and in 1791 he designed the Drury Lane Theatre for R. B. Sheridan.
