Fortitude

Statuette
18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a bronze statuette made in Venice in the style of Tiziano Aspetti, probably in the 18th century. Tiziano Aspetti (ca. 1559-1606) was a gifted sculptor in working bronze. He was the leading sculptor in Venice after Girolamo Campagna at the end of the 16th century. Aspetti worked primarily in Venice, mainly for Giovanni Grimani, a distinguished patron with a fine collection of antique sculpture. Fortitude may have been cast as late as the 18th century, but it reflects Aspetti’s characteristic style, with its small head and elongated figure.
