SWINGING

Engraving
20/07/1788 (publication)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Printed stipple engraving (probably one of a series). The engraving shows a group of children in a landscape, by a tall fence with an open gate from which ropes (and possibly a seat) have been slung to form a swing. A girl wearing a broad brimmed hat and a light coloured dress is sitting in the swing, while another girl in a similar dress with a sash is standing by her with her hands on the ropes to push the swing forward, and a boy in a skeleton suit is standing a few feet away with his hands outstretched, presumably to push her back again. Two younger children in dresses, probably a girl and a boy, are seated on the ground watching.
