In 1970 US Vogue noted 'It's all in the bag ... combinations of fur and reversed calf; leather and webbing; a patchwork of lizard in scarlet, orange, Irish green, taupe; camera cases; cartridge cases; mail pouches. Bags strapped right under the arm; long-strap bags slapping the thigh; Moroccan studding and embroidery; harness brass on fake python, sleek as Rotten Row'. A growing informality in dress and a tendency towards layering and mixing different weights and fabrics allowed the handbag, once so formal, to relax into a functional receptacle that was to be used for all occasions, to become battered and familiar. This red satin drawstring bag with clown applique forms part of a 'Harlequin' outfit.

Object history note

The complete ensemble was donated in 1979 with a customised Adel Rootstein mannequin specially made for the purpose of modelling it. This was part of a group of 25 such total ensembles donated in 1979.
