The city of Bokhara in Turkestan was the centre of religious life in Central Asia. In Preziosi's time it had a large number of mosques and it is said, 80 medreses or Islamic theological colleges for students. It was also a centre for the unofficial groups of holy men or dervishes like the one depicted here. This dervish has a dayak, or a prop used in meditation, and wears a leopard skin [see also D.26 -1907]

Object history
This is one of a group of 31 portraits, acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1900. They were once assembled in an album, but whether by Preziosi himself, or a member of his family, or subsequently, is not known.
