Kerch is one of the most ancient cities in what is now the Ukraine. It became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1475. In 1771 the Russian Army invaded the Crimea and in 1774, Kerch and Yenikale were ceded to Russia. Preziosi acted occasionally as a war artist during the Crimean War, 1854-1856, and this may be the reason that he depicted Ekinci, a native of Kerch.
