Prieur (ca. 1536-1611) was one of the most prolific French manufacturers of bronze statuettes in the decades around 1600. He was appointed Sculpteur du Roi to Henry IV in 1591 and probably made this bust shortly afterwards.

The bust was probably made soon after 1594, when Prieur was appointed Sculptor to the King, Henry IV.
Production
Previously thought to be a portrait bust of Mary Queen of Scots as Queen of France and attributed to Ponce Jacquio (1515-1572). This bust is made after 1594.
