Physical description

As the sun sets in the distance on the right, a rowing boat and a fishing boat (boeier) make their way towards a bridge with a characteristic Dutch drawbridge. On the opposite side of the river (the Vecht) is the cruciform church of St Ludgerus, Loenen aan de Vecht, with its tall tower. Two empty boats are moored near a bank of tall trees.

Falsely signed with the artist’s monogram, at lower right, in point of brush in black ink, AV(in ligature)DN(in ligature).

possibly Christiaan Josi (1768–1828), Amsterdam and London;1 William Esdaile (1758–1837), London (L. 2617), his sale, London, Christie’s, 18–25 June 1840, lot 969: ‘Van der Neer. A village-church, on a river––moonlight’ (to ‘Tiffin’ for £0. 4s. 0d); Miss Emily Dalton (1816/17–1900), Leicester, by whom bequeathed to the museum (NAL dry stamp on recto and Dalton Bequest purple ink stamp on verso of lining; neither in Lugt), 1900.
