The low-horizon, broad, rolling fields and tall trees with filigree-like foliage are characteristic of Vroom’s early landscapes. This drawing was once thought to show the English countryside, perhaps the Sussex Downs, but it now seems unlikely that Vroom ever visited England. The style reflects the influence of Dutch artists like Esaias van de Velde on Vroom.
