Bibliographic reference
Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings Volume I. 14th-16th century, London, 1979, p. 225. The text is as follows: VENICE: mid 16th century 504 Christ as the Man of Sorrows, in a landscape Inscribed in ink 'M.66' Pen and ink 6 3/8 x 4 ¾ (162 x I21) D.1042-1900 PROVENANCE Padre Resta; Lord Somers (as shown by the inscription: see Lugt 2981 and Lugt, Supplement, p. 419); Sir J. Reynolds (Lugt 2364) The name Tiziano is written against no. M.66 in the British Museum MS. that records Resta's comments on the drawings first in his, then in Somers's possession (see Lugt 2981 and Lugt, Supplement, p. 419 for an account of the MS). The attribution can no longer be accepted, though the drawing is of a type often ascribed to Titian in the past.
