The following is the full text of the entry: copy after CANTARINI, SIMONE 647 Studies for the Virgin and Child, St Joseph and the young St John the Baptist Red chalk 9 3/4 x 8 3/4 (248 x 222) D.l055-1900 PROVENANCE Dalton Bequest 1900 LITERATURE Dalton Catalogue, p. 18 ('style ofVerrocchio'); Reitlinger, p. 17, no. 35 (as by Simone Cantarini or possibly Elisabetta Sirani) Dr Andrea Emiliani, in a letter dated February 1960, states that he has found an exact repetition of this drawing in the Pinacoteca at Bologna (inv. no. 49-1633). He suggests that both drawings have weaknesses that indicate they are copies after an original by Cantarini.
