Physical description
Recto: on the left, St Joseph and a cow; in the centre, the Virgin and Child with the crib facing the spectator; on the right, a kneeling shepherdess, two elderly shephers and a young shepherdess carrying a jar on her head; above, in a separate sketch, a shepherd running towards the left. Verso: on the left, an angel and a shepherdess with a jar on her head; in the centre, the Virgin and Child seated, facing to the right; on the right, two kneeling figures, a shepherd holding up a lantern, and four lightly sketched figures, including a child, a shepherd raising his cap and a large dog; in the left background, architectural decoration, including a pillar on a pedestal.

Production Note
The recto is a copy by Jordeans of the central predella of Rubens' altarpiece of the Adoration of the Magi. This copy was probably made by Jordaens at the beginning of his preparation for the altarpiece of the Adoration of the Shepherds, originally in the church of the Canonesses Regular of St Augustine at Kortrijk.
