Ewer and Basin

16th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This copper dish was a luxury object designed to display the status of its owner. The maker would have used punches and hammers to work from the back of the metal to create the raised or embossed surface. Silversmiths often used this technique on silver, and copper was sufficiently malleable to be worked in the same way.

From about 1500 to 1600 Italian metalworkers decorated copperware with rich decoration that usually covered the whole surface. The strapwork and scrolling foliage on this dish are decorative motifs that were part of the Mannerist style that appeared in Northern Italy in about the 1520s.
